Get Involved

There are a number of ways to get involved in what's going on in Union Square:

Union Square Civic Advisory Committee (CAC)

The Union Square Civic Advisory Committee (CAC) is a committee of residents and business owners appointed by the Mayor to represent the interests of the Union Square community in guiding the Master Developer (US2) during the planning and build-out of the seven Union Square redevelopment parcels (map).  Meetings typically include representatives from US2 as well as Somerville's Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD).  All meetings are open to the public and all include a period for public comment.  Come learn what's going on and have your voice heard!

The CAC regularly, with standing monthly meetings as well as additional meetings as needed .  Meetings are typically held at the Lincoln Park Argenziano School at 290 Washington Street.  See our calendar for all meeting dates and sign up for Announcements to receive notices of schedule and location changes.

Union Square Master Developer (US2)

US2 is the Master Developer selected  by the City to plan and execute the development of seven parcels near the new Union Square MBTA Green Line station.  US2 is welcoming of direct questions and comments from the community.

Union Square Neighbors (USN)

Union Square Neighbors is a neighborhood association for residents and business owners.  It's geographic center is Union Square Plaza and it spans from Park Street to the West to Highland Ave. to the North to McGrath Highway to the East to the Cambridge border to the South (map).

Union Square Main Streets (USMS)

Union Square Main Streets is an organization of local residents and business owners dedicated to drawing people to Union Square, increasing foot traffic to local businesses, and generally making Union Square a more vibrant and interesting place.  They are the people behind the weekly farmers' market and the annual Fluff Festival.  They are always welcoming to new volunteers.

Union United Coalition (UUC)

Union United is a coalition of stakeholders, including small business owners, residents, activists, immigrant groups, religious congregations, labor unions, and community-based organizations, working to ensure that the Union Square redevelopment process results in tangible benefits – not displacement – for the Union Square community.  More information can be found at  http://www.unionunited2014.org/

Somerville by Design

‘Somerville by Design’ takes SomerVision, the City’s Comprehensive Master Plan, to the neighborhood scale. It continues Somerville's tradition of civic engagement, connecting people with best practices in planning and urban design that have emerged over the last fifteen years. Using urban design as the basis for public dialogue, the Somerville by Design “crowd-sources” creative ideas to understand how local people think their neighborhood should look, feel, and function. New technologies are helping Somerville and its partners to build and maintain public enthusiasm for projects and programs that are consistent with the SomerVision framework of conserving Somerville’s great blocks of traditional housing, enhancing our funky squares and main streets, and transforming underutilized areas on the southern and eastern edges of the city into new complete neighborhoods. The Somerville by Design process for Union Square is just starting now. Get involved!'
